Comedy Movies - Woody Allen - Annie Hall Blu-ray

Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Carol Kane
Directed by Woody Allen
Originally released 1977
Fox Home Entertainment 2012

Annie Hall and Manhattan are the Woody Allen movies people usually like. This is especially true of Annie Hall, a romantic comedy that has quite a few elements faux intellectuals like to point out but is mostly an erudite chick flick. The movie won 4 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay; Allen did not get an Oscar for Best Actor for playing another version of himself.

Allen plays stand-up comic Alvy Singer (some of his material is on Woody Allen Stand Up Comic. Singer is another minor twist on Allen’s usual neurotic New York Jew. Singer has two ex-wives and meets photographer – singer Annie Hall (Keaton) on the tennis court. The movie follows their relationship.

Everybody has a favorite Annie Hall scene. Most famous is the movie line-up where Alvy pulls Marshall McLuhan from behind a movie poster to contradict a pompous Columbia University professor who was perorating behind him.

Oddly, this New York comedy does not always work so you have to be in the right mood for it.

It is probably no coincidence that comic Richard Lewis and Annie Hall’s fictional comic Alvy Singer appeared at about the same time. Lewis uses every Singer mannerism.

Though an Annie Hall Blu-ray is good news for Woody Allen fans, there are no special features whatsoever available on this disc.
